Iodosorb Ointment: What It Is and How It Works
Iodosorb is an ointment that inhibits microbial growth in the wound and wound fluids. If you are wondering how it works and whether you can use it or not, read on to know its benefits, indications, and precautions you should note when using it.
Iodosorb ointment is a sterile formulation of 50% cadexomer iodine and 50% ointment base that functions as an antimicrobial wound barrier. This ointment swells and releases iodine when applied to the lesion. The released iodine acts as an antimicrobial agent and kills bacteria in the wound.
Apart from killing the bacteria, iodosorb ointment forms a gel on the applied surface and draws out exudate or wound fluids, pus, and debris. It creates a clean and moist environment for the wound to heal, helping reduce the odour in contaminated wounds.
These benefits make iodosorb ointment fit for treating infected wounds such as venous stasis ulcers, pressure sores, diabetic ulcers, and traumatic and surgical wounds. Generally, the iodosorb ointment absorbs fluids six to eight times its weight and changes colour from brown to yellow to indicate that the dressing has to be changed. This indication helps avoid unnecessary dressing changes that may disturb the healing process of the wound. The ointment is also non-adhesive and easily removed without damaging the fragile wound tissue. Overall, it promotes quicker wound healing and faster patient discharge eventually.
Iodosorb ointment contains 0.9% w/w iodine. This amount can trigger reactions from people with iodine sensitivity. You should also avoid using it on children aged 12 and below and pregnant women as its main component, iodine, is known to cross the placental barrier.
For people allowed to use iodosorb ointment, you should limit a single application to less than 50g. The weekly application should also not exceed 150g, and any course of treatment using iodosorb ointment should not exceed three months. Follow these precautions to ensure that you use the product based on how it should work and best experience its benefits.
